About Sam

Sam is a Counsellor, Accredited Mental Health Social Worker and qualified Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (CBT) with over 10 years experience practising in Government and Non Government services in Perth, Melbourne and London.

Sam utilises a number of evidence-based practice models including CBT and Systemic Therapy. Her therapeutic approach is down to earth, jargon-free and practical. She works to create a warm and safe environment for individuals to explore personal difficulties and strengths. Sam is skilled and experienced in several evidence-based counselling approaches, but will work with each individual to plan their counselling and ensure it is tailored to their individual goals and needs.

Sam’s special interests include working with children and adolescents (from 12 years and over). Sam is currently a senior clinician and counsellor working for a National Youth Mental Health Service. Sam also has extensive experience working with families who have been affected by disability and/or illness. Sam understands the rollercoaster of emotions that families often experience when adjusting to a diagnosis. This includes the impact on the individual as well as the impact on family relationships and dynamics, particularly for family carers and siblings.

Sam provides Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for adolescents and adults experiencing depression and anxiety. She has advanced training in CBT with the National Health Service and Southampton University. CBT is a type of Psychotherapy that focuses on the present and helps individuals to identify what is keeping their problem going (often their thoughts and behaviours) and then gives them the tools to change these unhelpful thoughts and behaviours. Sam is passionate about CBT because it teaches individuals to become their own therapists. Often individuals leave counselling with the knowledge and tools to continue to look after their own mental health. Therefore CBT is usually a short-term therapy.
